چکیده

Hurricanes are well known to cause considerable amount of damage in the Caribbean, a region that is highly susceptible to these phenomena and largely consists of small island developing economies. However, data constraints have limited the quantification of the damage to only very sparse and rough figures. In this paper we set out to quantify the economic damage due to hurricane strikes in the region using alternative data sources. Our innovation in this regard to use night lights data derived from satellite images the capture the extent of economic activity locally and then measures its changes after a hurricane strike. We proxy the potential damage due to a hurricane by using destruction index derived from actual hurricane track and a wind field model. Our results indicate that during our sample period 1992-2003 hurricanes significantly affected the extent to which economic activity as captured from outer space.

The fiscal implications of hurricane strikes in the Caribbean

a r t i c l e i n f o This paper empirically traces the fiscal impacts of hurricane strikes. To this end, a hurricane damage index is derived from a physical wind field model for a panel of Caribbean countries over 36 years. Results, based on panel VAR and impulse response functions analysis, show that, overall, hurricane strikes exert a short-term impact. Indeed, the study finds that the respo...

The Macroeconomic Impact of Natural Disasters in Developing Countries: Evidence from Hurricane Strikes in the Central American and Caribbean Region*

In this paper we investigate the macroeconomic impact of natural disasters in developing countries by examining hurricane strikes in the Central American and Caribbean region. Our innovation in this regard is to employ a wind field model on hurricane track data to arrive at a more scientifically based index of potential local destruction. This index allows us to identify damages at a detailed g...

Airborne Laser Scanning Quantification of Disturbances from Hurricanes and Lightning Strikes to Mangrove Forests in Everglades National Park, USA

Airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) measurements derived before and after Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma (2005) were used to quantify the impact of hurricanes and lightning strikes on the mangrove forest at two sites in Everglades National Park (ENP). Analysis of LIDAR measurements covering 61 and 68 ha areas of mangrove forest at the Shark River and Broad River sites showed that the pro...

The Economic Growth Impact of Hurricanes: Evidence from US Coastal counties

The Economic Growth Impact of Hurricanes: Evidence from US Coastal Counties We estimate the impact of hurricane strikes on local economic growth rates and how this is reflected in more aggregate growth patterns. To this end we assemble a panel data set of US coastal counties’ growth rates and construct a hurricane destruction index that is based on a monetary loss equation, local wind speed est...
